Karen Barbour is founder and president of The Barbour Group, LLC which she established in 2002 as a home-based, independent insurance agency focusing on construction bonding and commercial insurance. Since its founding, The Barbour Group has grown to serve a diverse clientele ranging from startups to Fortune 1000 companies throughout the United States. Citing her numerous contributions to the contracting industry, Karen was named the 2008 Maryland Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
From $20 to a Million, Steps to Create WEALTH
Ashish Shukla emigrated from India to the U.S. in 1989 with his family. They arrived with only $20 and he did not speak English. In 2004 he started his own business. The business is now bringing in several million dollars in revenue yearly. It works completely without him and he is personally a millionaire.
Keys to Successful Government Contracting
Charles Eaton, Director of Diversity and Project Development for Hensel Phelps will share some of the keys to how a small business can be successful in federal and state contracting. Hensel Phelps is one of the top general contractors in the nation and has been in business since 1937. Charles Eaton will only be present on 11/18.

Jessica Hornedo, president and founder of "The Home Décor Physician", joins the panel of speakers to explain how to create and become "known" in your area as "The Expert".
Learned to STAND OUT and Thrive rather than Barely Survive
Jenny Lind Walsh owns Legacy Contracting, an excavating, paving and utility contracting business. Legacy has overseen hundreds of construction site work projects. Like most businesses, the recession almost destroyed the company. However, by implementing key strategies, she was able to turn the business around. Through restructuring, reorganizing and with new marketing she was able to "STAND OUT". Jenny Walsh will be present on 11/16 and 11/17.
Panel facilitated by: Russell Teter, Northern Maryland SBDC Director, has personally aided over 10,000 entrepreneurs in improving their economic situation; his assistance has led to the acquisition of tens of millions in equity/debt financing as well as the creation and retention of thousands of jobs. Russell has received numerous awards, especially in his work in federal contracting assistance, such as the 2010 Maryland Minority Business Champion of the Year and recognitions including Proclamations from Maryland Governors and Congressional Citations from Members of Congress. He is a certified instructor by the Kauffmann Foundation, the world's largest foundation devoted to entrepreneurship. Russell has authored numerous articles for University of Maryland, College Park, including Do You Own Your Business or Does Your Business Own You? and The 5 Drivers of Your Bottom Line.
